Corner Art Space is thrilled to present Jean Rim's first solo exhibition in Seoul to include her recent paintings and an installation with sound, opening on January 10, 2014 and on view through February 4, 2014. The opening this January 10th from 6-9pm will also kick off the new year at Corner Art Space.
As the title suggests, the artist is focused on “A Whale in the Room.” This concept is a play on the English idiom “an elephant in the room,” a phrase used when someone or something obvious is not talked about, mentioned or brought up. In the information era, where human beings have infinite access to knowledge and the news, the artist has noticed that in various social settings talking about unhappy stories, uncomfortable subjects of war and starvation are brushed aside; in South Korea the artist observed an over-emphasis on happy endings and positivity.
Jean comments: “The fascinating thing is that we live in a world where many people are not happy and very much on multiple prescriptions, diets and reading copious amounts of self-help books. I think there is a “disconnect” with the conversation being had and what the speaker is probably feeling. Maybe subliminally the disheartening reality of the future of our environment, war on women and children, and the bleakness of the breakdown of democracy is seeping in. Our media channels are obsessed and overwhelming us. Some of us may silently take on these issues in a blog, chat room or write a ground-breaking article outside the person to person conversation, however, would discussing these issues create solutions or only bring about a depressing malaise? And by not talking about them and looking at whales, is that OK?”
These questions are interpreted in her installation and the exhibition will include playful paintings of killer whales, onerous orca, and the artist’s other favorite subject the unicorn-giraffe, horned giraffe-camelopardalis. The paintings are purposely delightful to present one of the most intelligent predators of the giant ocean that even sharks are wary of and the viewer may find them adorable. These graphic creatures are painted in hand-made egg tempera paint on archival paper. The unicorn-giraffe is another creature that has the power to distract even mystify and ameliorate the viewer from the sound piece that is subtly playing in the background. The sound piece emits killer whales “speaking” and whales breathing as they surface the water—then suddenly stark statistics are randomly stated in English, Korean, Spanish and German. These spoken facts include population size, how many days of gas we have left and numbers calculating how as co-habitants of the Earth we are affecting the planet. Included in the installation are true-to-life sized dorsal fins of a killer whale pod to show the awesome size of the orcas, which is what one normally sees on a whale watching excursion. This first solo exhibition at Corner Art Space by Jean Rim will present a body of work that is simultaneously optimistic and depressing while questioning the deeper more complex issues of our time.

A WHALE IN THE ROOM>라는 제목 아래, 새롭게 선보이는 회화 작업과 사운드 작업을 소개한다. An Elephant in the Room”라는 영미권 관용어에서 차용해왔다.
